AT&T gauges interest in the Samsung Galaxy Nexus on Google+

AT&T gauges interest in the Samsung Galaxy Nexus on Google+
AT&T was running a poll on Google+ whether its customers will be interested in getting the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Now that's what we call democracy, and the carrier requested everyone who means it to +1 it.

Maybe Verizon's exclusivity will be broken with AT&T availability as well after all, given that UK customers already got their hands on a GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus, and FCC had it stamped with a T-Mobile/AT&T radio inside in the US.

AT&T was referencing a post how it preps cell phones for portfolio acceptance, and someone complained it would be more interesting if it featured the Galaxy Nexus being readied for launch. The carrier then asked how many people would be interested in getting the first phone with Android Ice Cream Sandwich, and there were more than a thousand +1s, which AT&T is planning to relay to the product team for consideration. The poll seems taken down now, but hopefully it made an impact.

Nexus S gets Android 4.0 early through open-source port

Nexus S ready for Android 4 with AOSP build

Google's posting of the Android 4.0 source code has led to an early port to the Nexus S for those willing to experiment. The custom-built firmware has most hardware and software features working, including 4.0-specific features like hardware acceleration of the interface and Face Unlock. A follow-up Wi-Fi patch is needed to get the shorter-ranged wireless working, but it can otherwise work as a full phone.
The unofficial install still carries significant risks. USB Mass Storage doesn't work, although ADB mode does. Video recording also doesn't work, and the Data Usage app can't track what's running. By its nature, the build doesn't include the bottom navigation buttons on the touchscreen and still relies on hardware controls.

Early testers can get the code for both the original, T-Mobile oriented Nexus S or the Nexus S 4G on Sprint. Either install is "at your own risk," forum member kwiboo warned, and risks problems. Officially, Google is due to push an official Android 4.0 build to every Nexus S in the next few weeks and will be the safest route.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus survives a key scratch test, worries about Gorilla Glass look silly now

Samsung Galaxy Nexus survives a key scratch test, worries about Gorilla Glass look silly now
We were pretty confident that Samsung has done its homework to protect the screen on the Galaxy Nexus, but when Corning said there is no Gorilla Glass on the handset, rather another type of "fortified glass", there was a lot of backlash on the Internets with people getting disappointed.

As if to prove that Gorilla Glass is just the most popular household name when it comes to toughened glass, which makes Corning, its maker, a marketing genius, the screen on the Galaxy Nexus was scratched with keys by someone the minute after they got it, demonstrating that the other tough glass makers are good too.

The result is pretty (in)visible in video, so we can now sleep tight again, knowing that it will be safe to drop the 4.65" HD display on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in the same pocket with your car keys.

Leak puts Galaxy Nexus in Verizon stores December 8th

Leak puts Galaxy Nexus in Verizon stores December 8th
A new leak is making the rounds which says that the Galaxy Nexus will be making its way into Verizon stores on December 8th, but there's no word on if this is the full release or just for stores. As with everything concerning the Galaxy Nexus release in the US, the information is lacking.

Leak puts Galaxy Nexus in Verizon stores December 8th
If we want to be negative about the whole situation, the leaked documents make it seem like the launch of the Galaxy Nexus has been delayed until December. However, if we're to believe Google, which has repeated many times that the phone would launch in November. We'd point to the fact that previous Verizon leaks have put the release date for purchasing the phone online-only in November. So, it's likely that the phone will launch in November, but just won't be in Verizon stores until December.

Of course, this is all just endless speculation.

Samsung Galaxy SII sweeps 'Best New Mobile Device' at 4G World

image
MUMBAI: Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile) received three awards at the recently held 2011 Best of 4G Award ceremony. Samsung Galaxy S(R) II - Epic(TM) 4G Touch won the first place in the Best New Mobile Device category.
Hosted by 4G World and Connected Planet, Samsung Galaxy S(R) I with T-Mobile and the Galaxy S(R) II with AT&T rounded out the entire Best New Mobile Device category with a tie for second place.
Samsung Mobile president Dale Sohn said, “We are honoured and humbled to have all three of our Galaxy S II devices receive such high acclaim from 4G World, the largest global 4G Expo. Being recognized by 4G World continues to build on the worldwide success of the Galaxy S II portfolio.”
The US launch of Galaxy S II has only heightened the success of the Galaxy S brand all over the world, which Samsung recently announced has achieved a combined total of 30 million global sales, a new record for the Korean company, states the release.
4G World senior director of marketing Kathleen Mitchell said, “The Best of 4G Awards recognize leaders in the development and deployment of 4G technologies, which is why we selected the entire Galaxy S II portfolio for the top three spots in the Best New Mobile Device category. We are excited to honor Samsung's innovative design and technology and their commitment to creating 4G-enabled devices.”

Google updates Galaxy Nexus specs, may have killed 32GB model

Google has quietly changed the spec sheet for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus on the official US website. Of course, as with most things concerning the Nexus, we don't know for sure because Google hasn't come out and said anything, but the changes are not all good news, especially for those hoping for a non-Verizon model.

Google updates Galaxy Nexus specs, may have killed 32GB model
The spec sheet on the US page only mentions an LTE/CDMA model, and there is no mention right now of an HSPA+ model (though you can see those if you go to the UK page.) Because it is only listing the Verizon model, there is no mention of a smaller 1750 mAh battery (which is in the GSM version), and only lists the 1850 mAh battery. But, listing a bigger battery isn't a bad thing. The potentially bad news is that Google has removed the 32 GB model from the listings. Originally, there had been listings for both 16 GB and 32 GB models of the Galaxy Nexus, but now only the 16 GB model is listed. Again, we don't know if this means that there won't be a 32 GB model for Verizon, but it certainly doesn't bode well.

We've contacted Google, and we'll let you know if we get a response.
