Galaxy Tab and Galaxy S won’t get ICS updates, sky continues to be blue

Considering how hard it is to get Android manufacturers to update nearly new phones to the latest official software version, it should be no surprise that Samsung has declined to upgrade the Galaxy S line of smartphones and the original Galaxy Tab to Ice Cream Sandwich. The company confirmed the news on its Samsung Tomorrow (translated) blog, disappointing many and surprising few. If you can read Korean or make sense of the Google translation, it looks like TouchWiz is a primary culprit.

Samsung notes that unlike Nexus phones, the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab require extra space for TouchWiz, video applications and carrier additions. There’s an obvious answer to that conundrum, Samsung, and it’s spelled A-O-S-P – just leave out the extra stuff that few are particularly fond of anyway, and you’ll be golden. But TouchWiz has become Samsung’s hallmark on the Android platform. It would be easy enough to send out a Galaxy S Ice Cream Sandwich ROM based on the software update now available for the near-identical Nexus S, but it appears that differentiation via TouchWiz is more conducive to “the best user experience”. It’s not especially good news, but at this point in Android’s evolution it’s unfortunately par for the course.
Of course, we would be lax in our editorial duties if we didn’t remind you that the carrier and manufacturer isn’t the only place to find software updates. Both the international version of the Galaxy S and the WiFi Galaxy Tab already have home-cooked Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs in the making, and they will probably only get better now that the Nexus S update is widely available. Official updates for the Galaxy S II and all the second generation versions of the Galaxy Tab should be ready by early next year.

Apple’s Attempt To Have Galaxy Tab 10.1N Banned Unlikely To Succeed

Apple managed to get the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 banned in Germany, due to apparent patent infringements, and Samsung released a new version of the tablet with some design changes to comply with the court ruling.
Shortly after the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1N was released in Germany, Apple filed another case with the court in an attempt to have the new tablet banned again, although it would appear that the judge in the latest case thinks Samsung has changed the tablet enough to avoid another ban.
Apple's Attempt To Have Galaxy Tab 10.1N Banned Unlikely To Succeed
“Consumers are well aware that there is an original and that competitors try to use similar designs, so buyers are vigilant when looking at products,” Brueckner-Hofmann said. “We don’t think that someone buys a Samsung (005930) to make his table neighbor at the coffee house believe he owns an iPad.”
We will have to wait till the 9th of February to find out what the final outcome will be, but we suspect the new tablet wont end up being banned in Germany.

GTA III goes on sale for the holidays, brings violence and cheer to Galaxy Nexus owners

GTA3 on Galaxy Nexus
A classic title like Grand Theft Auto III isn't exactly at hard sell at $5 on your smartphone or tablet -- at $3 you're almost a fool not to snatch it up. Perhaps more importantly though, Rockstar has expanded support for the crime adventure to a trio of Android handsets -- the Droid Bionic, Galaxy S II and, the phone of the moment, the Galaxy Nexus. While the white list only gains three new devices right now, there's potential to add more handsets down the line. The game is finally optimized for use with PowerVR GPUs, which are found in any phone running an OMAP or Exynos processor. So, what are you waiting for? Hit up the market now to get your dose of violence, mayhem and hall of fame gaming.

Engadget's Holiday Blues-buster 2011: win a Verizon Galaxy Nexus, courtesy of Appitalism!

Get drooling, gadget fans, because Day Four of our weeklong Holiday Blues-buster giveaway is upon us -- and if none of the other items get your heart pumping this week, this one will. At stake here is a freshly-minted Verizon Galaxy Nexus LTE, thanks to the folks at Appitalism (the mobile app superstore)! We hear these little pocket calculators are pretty hard to come by right now, and we imagine you won't hesitate to jump at the chance to win one, so jump past the break to see all the rules and leave a comment!

Oh, and as a nice little bonus, Appitalism is also adding a pair of Beats over-the-ear headphones (a $300 value) to sweeten the deal even more, just in case the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have enough sugar for you. Good luck!

Download and install Google Wallet on your Verizon Galaxy Nexus; No root required!

We all know by now that Verizon asked Google not to include Google Wallet in their Galaxy Nexus, well that didn't sit well with a lot of people. Thanks to XDA, the apk is now available that works, with no zip file to flash, no root or scripts needed. The only thing is, if you have flashed a previous mod of Google Wallet, you will need to revert back to your backup without Google Wallet or it wont work, download the apk (below), and install it as you would any other apk

Nexus Ninjas return to unbox the Galaxy Nexus

Google has a tradition with every release of a Nexus phone. The Ninja Unboxing. If you are new to this, check out the Nexus One Ninja Unboxing and the Nexus S Ninja Unboxing.

The Ninja Unboxing 3 for the Galaxy Nexus is a new experience. Google went 8-bit on us and turned the Unboxing into an old-school arcade style first person beat-em-up Ninja game. Before you go to the page, make sure you have the next 10-15 minutes free, and ... well, you'll find out how it ends.

If that wasn't enough, the game is available in the Android Market, incase you happen to have 15 more minutes to kill. Details after the break.

German court tells Apple to cool it, Galaxy Tab 10.1N injunction unlikely

When Apple’s patent case against Samsung in Germany led to a total sales injunction against the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Samsung released a revised version named the Galaxy Tab 10.1N. The updated hardware altered the design and branding of the tablet in order to avoid violating Apple’s design patents, most notably with a set of front-facing speakers that flanked the screen. Apparently it wasn’t good enough for Apple, and continuing in their worldwide crusade against all things Android they petitioned the court for yet another sales injunction in November. Reuters reports that the judge in the case has indicated that the updated hardware is sufficiency dissimilar to the iPad, and Apple’s design patents are not being infringed.

The ruling isn’t final yet, but it’s hard to imagine what kind of extra evidence Apple could show to change the judge’s opinion. The honorable Johanna Brueckner-Hofmann has scheduled her final ruling for February 9th of next year. This ruling doesn’t change the injunction against the original Galaxy Tab 10.1, which is still in effect in Germany. Apple successfully sued and won a ban on the same model in Australia, but the decision was overturned on appeal, and the tablet is on sale once again. Apple’s attempts to ban Samsung tablets and phones in the US has been unsuccessful so far.
The primary changes in the 10.1N model are a reworked edge with visible front speakers and the SAMSUNG logo on the bottom portion of the bezel. That appears to be just enough differentiation for Germany, but not for Apple, who would prefer gigantic bezels, thicker profiles, non-rectangular shapes and a “cluttered” appearance. The company was forced to outline its parameters for a device that would not violate its patents in the US case, and the requirements were just shy of insane. Apple continues its patent war against multiple Android manufacturers – the latest victory is a software patent against HTC at the US International Trade Commission.

Samsung’s Galaxy Y Duos and Galaxy Y Pro Duos do the SIM card two-step

Samsung’s expanding universe of Galaxy-branded phones now includes two new satellites: the Galaxy Y Duos and Galaxy Y Pro Duos. The Galaxy Y variants are the first of Samsung’s new “Dous” line. The slate and QWERTY form factors are nothing to write home about, but the insides conceal a surprise: support for dual SIM cards. Otherwise, you get a pair of budget Android phones with GSM radios tuned to international GSM standards.

Both phones run 2.3 Gingerbread with 3-megapixel rear cameras and VGA front-facing cams. The Galaxy Y Duos uses a 3.14-inch LCD screen as its only input aside from Samsung’s standard navigation buttons, while the Galaxy Y Pro Duos shrinks the screen down to 2.6 inches and crams in a full hardware keyboard. Both screens are a disappointing 320 x 240, but at such a small size that’s not a deal-breaker. Samsung’s TouchWiz adorns the interface.
The new dual-SIM phones get 4GB of built-in storage each, with a free 2GB MicroSD card thrown in for good measure. The standard model has a 1300 mAh battery while the Pro gets a slightly expanded 1350 version. These aren’t exactly gunning for the superphone crowd, but they should make solid budget phones. If you frequently travel internationally and swap out SIM cards for local use, the flexible hardware could come in handy. The Galaxy Y Duos and Galaxy Y Pro Duos should become available everywhere except the United States starting in January. Prices were not provided.

Grand Theft Auto 3 update adds Bionic and Galaxy Nexus support, on sale for $2.99

Yes! The awesome guys over at Rockstar games has just delivered not one, but two gifts for Android fans this holiday season. The recently released for Android version of Grand Theft Auto III has been dropped to just $2.99 for the holiday season until December 29th. If you get any AMEX giftcards for Christmas you might want to snatch this game before the price goes back up.

Not only did this awesome and epic crime-style mobster game get a 40% discount but it has been updated to support some of the latest and greatest smartphones. Most of the 1 star ratings were for cut scenes freezing the game, and the lack of device support. All Samsung Galaxy S II phones, DROID Bionic, and the brand new Galaxy Nexus all are now fully supported on GTA III. Who’s ready to steal some cars?
The list of improvements also mentions those cut scenes and immediately skipping cutscenes will no longer cause issues and freezing for most devices. They’ve also increased the shader error handling and improved on the graphics a bit. Not to mention the user bug and performance fixes we see on every changelog. Get it now for the holiday price of just $2.99 from the market link below — and don’t forget to be nice to pedestrians and stop at all red lights.

NFL Mobile headed to Galaxy Nexus today — Super Bowl live stream included

When I received my shiny new Galaxy Nexus from Verizon with 4G LTE I was excited to try NFL Mobile — their awesome (and sadly exclusive) NFL app that basically is a must-have for any Football fan. Not to mention NFL Mobile premium with free live streaming of all NFL games including the Super Bowl is free for 4G LTE smartphone customers. Sadly it was not supported on the Galaxy Nexus but according to Droid-Life that should be changing today.

After being quite disappointed by not having this new flagship 4G LTE device be supported I reached out to Verizon support and didn’t get any firm details other than they were working on a fix. We’ve received a few tips and now with the information learned today we are now happy to report Verizon should be pushing an update at some point today, December 22nd, that will enable full Android 4.0 ICS and Galaxy Nexus support with NFL Mobile.
Currently the application is still on the last version and no update is available at this time. For those huge NFL fans wanting to stream the Thursday blowout game coming tonight, or all the Saturday playoff implicating games be sure to check for updates throughout the day — Or just install the non-compatible version now and it’ll notify you when the time comes.

Shadowgun update hits Android Market with Tegra 3 support

If you are one of the lucky few that was able to snag a pre-order for the hotly anticipated ASUS Transformer Prime and that beastly quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor then I have some great news for you. One of the best shooter games available for Android called SHADOWGUN has just been updated with Transformer Prime and Tegra 3 support — making it have by far some truly stunning graphics.

We were lucky enough to get a first-hand look at the pre-production version for Tegra 2 devices and did a few hands-on videos for those looking to see just how impressive the graphics can be on a mobile device. In our timeline below will be plenty about Shadowgun and both of our hands-on video posts.
This is probably one of the best games available for Android in terms of third person shooters and really showcases the ability of the NVIDIA processors and gaming prowess. The Tegra 3 supported version has tons of increased graphics and visuals. With real-time lighting effects, amazing water visuals with reflections and more. I had fun just shooting the water and watch the detailed splashes. This is one of those games that really shows what we can expect with mobile gaming in the future and with 2012 quad-core enabled devices.
Here’s a quick demo from our sister site SlashGear and our very own Chris Burns comparing regular Shadowgun to the Tegra 3 version on the Prime
I know many are still waiting on availability and pre-orders and it looks like ASUS might not have nearly as much stock and supply as they should have. Pre-orders have sold out at Amazon, Best Buy, and almost every other online retailer with some expecting shipments to not go out until late January. If you were able to get one — or found stock in a Best Buy then head to the market link below and try out this Tegra 3 optimized game today.

You have died of dysentery: Oregon Trail is free on the Android Market

Who among us can’t remember crowding around the class Macintosh to watch one lucky kid at a time try to make the journey west to the pixelated promised land in Oregon Trail. Well, probably quite a few of us – those of you who are significantly older or younger than I am, for a start. But I digress. Oregon Trail is back, this time from mobile mega-developer Gameloft, in an updated version for your Android phone or tablet. And it’s free.

For the two of you out there in Internet Land who never played one of Oregon Trail’s many iterations, it goes something like this: you start of as a family of frontier hopefuls, buying a wagon, oxen and supplies in Missouri, trying to survive the perilous journey to Oregon. You could name your character and family members (most of my classmates opted for names with just four letters), make course decisions at key crossroads, repair and resupply your wagon along the way, and of course, hunt wildlife for food. In an oddly macabre edition to a kids’ game, your family members – and eventually the player character – can die in grisly, horrible and ultimately realistic ways. Always a crowds pleaser.
Gameloft’s version, entitled Oregon Trail: Settler, brings the same core survivalist gameplay with some pleasing modern tweaks. Once you reach the end of your journey you’re introduced to a Sim City-style isometric town, where you must farm, market and defend your property. The game is free in the Android Market (that’s zero buckskins for you pioneer types) and available now for all recent versions of Android. Remember: always buy lots of bullets.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus modification will change your softkeys and their color

For Galaxy Nexus owners that just picked up their device from Verizon, you may finally have a reason to root your device. Yes, rooting does void your warranty – but it opens a world of new available features. Even though Verizon’s Nexus is fairly new, development has been progressing at an excellent rate. We recently discussed a battery mod compatible with the Android Revolution HD ROM for the Galaxy Nexus, and now there is a softkey mod that adds a “Search” softkey pictured as a magnifying glass to the right of the bottom menu buttons.

The softkeys are also available in different colors; personally, I prefer the ICS blue. It looks excellent. You can now expect support for both the 4.0.2 and 4.0.3 based ROMs, and as they are incorporated into future work – I’m sure the project will continue its support. Paired with the battery percentage modification, the Galaxy Nexus couldn’t feel more complete.
However, we haven’t had a chance to test out any of the newly developed kernels yet – and there are plenty out there. Most require the user to be on a 4.0.3 base, but until a few more bugs are worked out I plan on keeping a close eye out instead of continuously flashing the latest builds. If any of you are rocking a Galaxy Nexus, feel free to share with the community how much better/worse your battery life has become.

Dropbox supporting Android 4.0 optimizations hits Android Market

The Dropbox team has updated their Android app for 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) optimization and added some great new features. To name a few, the Favorites tab offers quick offline access to files, multiple uploads of photos and videos are now available, renaming files and folders now works, and single-tab access to all file and folder actions functions properly.

Until now, this version has been sitting over on the Dropbox forums to allow users to publicly test it out to make sure it was ready for prime time. And after two days, it finally is. Just navigate over to the Android Market for a quick update or initial download. The improved and polished gallery view is a step up as well – so be sure to check it out.
But when all is said and done, I can’t seem to steer away from Box (formerly Box.net). Once it too becomes ICS optimized, I’ll probably convert completely and use it alone as my primary cloud storage container. It is fast, responsive, and I currently can’t conceive a way to improve it.

Samsung CES 2012 teaser video promises Smart TV future

It’s less than a month now before we’re diving deep into the loving arms of the biggest gadget show of the year, the Consumer Electronics Show 2012, and Samsung has revealed their first dip into the teaser game, complete with a history lesson on the basics of television. This is not the first time we’ve seen Samsung work with smart televisions, it being one of the most visible names in the game over this past year without a doubt with such gems as the Samsung UN55D8000 55-Inch 1080p 240Hz 3D LED Smart TV. What we’re seeing here is a teaser showing not a whole lot of new information, but a teaser leading us to believe Samsung is dipping into the Smart TV game again soon.

The video you’ll see here shows several iterations of the family at home watching the television, each one basically the same but with tinges of less desirable situations leading up to the current seating of the family. This newest set has the family of four which now only appears to have one person left in the interested set, the other three paying attention instead to a tablet computer. The father of the bunch has other ideas, of course, and continues to use a remote control, demanding that his minions watch the bigger screen. Can we expect a tablet-hating TV in 2012?
Of course we’ll find out at CES, this taking place at the start of January in Las Vegas, Nevada. We’ll be there will bells on and will be reporting back to you directly here on SlashGear. Dive deep into the trailers and teasers for now with the tag CES 2012!

Nexus Prime

The Samsung Nexus Prime is one of the most anticipated smartphones of this year. With there being quite a few specification leaks from anonymous tipsters, as well as a hands-on video, the wait for the official unveiling was finally coming to an end. The company even put up a teaser video with the catch-line "Something BIG is coming". However, although Samsung was set to officially announce the device on October 11th, 2011, at the Samsung Unpacked event, that plan has since been altered. The event date has been postponed as of now.

Here is detailed coverage on all the latest leaks, spills and updates about one of the hottest upcoming handsets, this year. You can follow this section to get all the Nexus Prime news that's making the rounds.

Mobile Grudge Match - Samsung Galaxy S II vs Motorola RAZR XT910

Mobile Grudge Match - Samsung Galaxy S II vs Motorola RAZR XT910
2011 has been a big year for mobile phones, and two of the biggest phones to have launched, this year have been Samsung’s Galaxy S II and the recent Motorola RAZR XT910. While they’re close, with regard to specs, each one has a few distinctive “earmarks” that set them apart from the rest of the heavy duty devices out there, right now. In another edition of our Gadget Grudge match, we’ve pitted these two power houses against each other to see who makes it out on top.

Samsung Galaxy S II
Samsung’s Galaxy S II was this year’s "big deal" in the mobile segment. Sure Apple got its spotlight, but when the S II packed in the features into a slim fit that measured just 8.5mm in depth, the industry standard went up. The fact is that the S II managed to outperform a large number of handsets in its class and proved to be a very functional device. It had plenty to offer in terms of media capabilities as well as overall functionality. Features like gesture-based support for various purposes come in very handy. It pulls its weight extremely well and comes off as a feature rich device with great performance scores as well.

Motorola RAZR XT910
Knocking the S II off the slimmest handset pedestal, the RAZR XT910 is a bit late in making an entry this year, but certainly not one you can afford to miss. The RAZR comes off as a very serious piece of mobile hardware. From its Kevlar and splash resistant skin to scratch resistant display and ultra slim shell (7.1mm), the RAZR is, in terms of aesthetics, a very sound device. Motorola has tried to ensure that users get an equal helping of business class features as well as media support for all purposes. An AI like feature called Smart Actions has been pre-loaded onto the RAZR to help enhance the overall functionality of the device.

Well that’s’ a quick overview of the devices themselves. You can read the full reviews by clicking on the links. Here’s our Tech2 Score Sheet with the specs of both devices.

To sum it up, the RAZR wins by a few millimeters both literally and figuratively. When it comes down to it the RAZR, although it doesn’t have a removable battery compartment it is most assuredly of a better build quality and looks and feels sturdier than the S II. The S II, as great a device as it is, comes off as a tad flimsy. In the looks department the RAZR wins hands down.

Superficial features aside, when it comes down to the nitty-gritty of it all, features and performance also played an equally important role. Both handsets are extremely capable devices. We ran Linpak and AnTuTu tests on both devices to see what kind of synthetic benchmarking we get. We found the Galaxy S II to be far more superior to the RAZR (see table). In overall functionality, although the RAZR had a far smoother UI with more fluid transitions and animations as compared to the S II, we did find that the process itself was a tad quicker on the latter device. While scrolling through web pages though, the S II appeared to have a smoother flow with the RAZR depicting slightly jerkier movements between pages.

Both devices are equipped with Super AMOLED displays, but the pixel density and resolution is higher on the RAZR making pictures, video and generic imagery a little sharper with colours a little more vibrant. The white and black tones were also more vivid on Motorola’s offering and visibility in bright daylight conditions was definitely better as well. Picture and video quality was pretty much the same and only a hardcore photographer would be able to pin point issues, colour distortions and other artifacts. The S II is pre-loaded with plenty of codec support, so that takes it a bit ahead, but with free players available on the Android Market, the point is moot. With an HDMI port as opposed to MHL (Mobile Hi-Def Linking) found on the S II, we preferred the most common micro HDMI option to be better.

The Bottom Line
At the end of the day, if you’ve got Rs. 33,000 to spend, and you’re looking for a handset that embodies all of today’s most relevant features, looks good enough to impress the ladies and business competitors and is durable enough to take almost anything, the RAZR XT910 is that device. Mind you, the Samsung S II is a very worthy opponent, but loses out to the RAZR due a few minor things, although its pricing is surely not going to hamper its sales in any way.
