Moments ago, Google announced that they will start rolling out the official Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Nexus S starting from today. It was late last night that Google also released Android 4.0.3, which includes some bug fixes and provides developers with a few more APIs to play around with.
The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update will bring with it many new features including GPU rendered UI, new web browser, new launcher, a magazine style UI, enhanced copy and style method and much more. Sadly, the much touted and hyped Face Unlock feature is missing from the official ICS update for the Nexus S. According to one Google employee, its because the Nexus S hardware is too weak to support the Face Unlock feature. Ironically, all the custom Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs for the Nexus S do have the Face unlock feature, and it works like a charm. Google has also released the ICS source code for the Nexus S and the LTE version of the Galaxy Nexus.
The update is being rolled out in stages, and can take nearly a month (!) before it hits your Nexus S. Alternatively, Users can also manually install the update by following the steps mentioned here. Nexus S owners must keep in mind that they will not get the official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update on their handset, if they have unlocked the bootloader on their handset.
