Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd said on Sunday its annual mobile handset sales this year had exceeded 300 million units for the first time in the company’s history.
Samsung is the first vendor to have reached the 300 million mark in Korea and the second one to do so in the world after the world’s biggest mobile phone maker, Nokia.
To make and ship the record amount, Samsung manufactured 820-thousand handsets a day, which translates to making at least 9 handsets per second.
After shipping 1 million units of cell phones in 1996, the Korean company has grown quickly over the years breaking the 100 million mark in 2005, and the 200 million mark in 2009.
“We are incredibly proud of this record-breaking sales milestone and have exceeded the annual target announced early this year, which is testament to the enduring appeal of Samsung phones with consumers around the world,” said Shin Jong-kyun, president and head of Samsung’s mobile communications business.
