Samsung’s newly launched Galaxy Nexus appears to suffer from an inexplicable bug that causes the handset’s volume to be automatically muted, user testimonies suggest.
Complaints from buyers who picked up the handset since Thursday have been flooding in on forums and social networks. Although a specific cause for the glitch has not been pinned down yet, the received wisdom suggests it might have something to do with the handset’s 2G signal.
Turns out the issue only affects users on the 900MHz frequency, which sadly, is almost everyone in Europe. As long as you’re on 3G, though, you should be fine. However, if you see a ‘G’ or ‘E’ icon at the top of the screen, which stand for GPRS and EDGE respectively and fall under 2G, you’re likely to encounter the problem.
One user named Duddyroar posted a video (see below) demonstrating the volume rocker’s erratic behaviour when pressed, resulting in it sometimes stopping responding altogether.
Unfortunately, a fix has not been discovered to counter the bug and Google has still to make a comment. However, given the growing rate with which it’s cropping up online, we expect a software patch to be released soon.
The last thing the search giant will want is a PR disaster in its hands akin to the one suffered by the iPhone 4S.
