Developer Mixes One Part Galaxy Nexus, One Part Kinect & One Part Projector For Wall-Sized Android Interface Treat

What do you get when you combine an Xbox 360 Kinect System, a Galaxy Nexus and an ambitious Android user? You get the ability to use an enlarged wall-size Android 4.0 interface, fully interactive and controllable of course. Modder DDRBoxman of Rcursive Penguin put some of his blood, sweat and tears with a splash of brilliance to achieve this amazing ability called the Android Kinect Projector Interface w/ System Access. You all are wondering how in the world is this possible, right? It’s no simple feat folks. The first step is made possible by connecting the Xbox Kinect to a Windows PC, capturing the touch input via a custom application and sending the “taps” on the projected image back to the Galaxy Nexus, which is sending its video out through an HDMI adapter. If it sounds simple, it’s not— to allow the Nexus to accept input from the TUIO application, the DDRBoxman had to create his own custom ROM from source.
While this seems like a terribly complicated process, you gotta admit– this customization is as cool as it gets. Think about it– imagine the ability to plug your Android phone or tablet directly into a projector, then position it so that the front or rear camera is observing the projected image, you’d have all the hardware components necessary to duplicate this trick without anything else needed except for an app and a massive portable interface.
